Description	The primary purpose of this study was to determine the current educational level of police chiefs in Delaware as well as the educational requirements to become a Delaware police officer. It also was used to establish the extent these police agencies have implemented partnerships with colleges, universities, or other agencies offering distance learning programs. Finally, this study was used to assess how Delaware police chiefs regard the importance of utilizing police education delivered by distance learning technology. The targeted population for the study included the police chiefs in 47 police agencies in Delaware policing a population of approximately 900,000. These agencies reviewed suggestions from the National Crime Commission in 1967 and the Minnesota Police Officers Standards and Training of 1977 to implement higher educational standards. Based on the findings of the study, majority of the police chiefs possess a bachelor's degree, but the majority of these chiefs only require a high school diploma as an educational requirement to become a police officer in their agencies. The majority of the police chiefs also reported that they do not have partnerships with institutions of higher education, but the majority did indicate that it is of great importance that police departments should support distance education models with institutions of higher education and would fund these partnerships if outside funding was available. These findings will assist in the planning, utilizing, and managing of higher education curricula delivered to Delaware police personnel.
