Description	The academic interventions for students in the Delsea Regional School District who fail the New Jersey GEPA are not addressing all reasons for the failure. Students who do not pass the Grade 8 test go on to have higher dropout and transfer rates than their peers; a percentage of students who fail the high-stakes Grade 11 HSPA test have also failed the GEPA. The focus of intervention for this group should not solely address academics, but should address other factors that may lead this group to drop out: poor grades and increased absences. The literature suggests that the intervention for students who fail this test must move beyond classroom academics to include mentoring. This paper provides the intellectual construct for a mentoring program for the students who fail the GEPA. It also examines how mentoring has been used successfully across the nation, and how it can be linked to student achievement and completion of high school. An analysis of the statistics from the Delsea Regional School District provides insight into the need for such a program. Recommendations for policy are based on the current literature about dropouts and mentoring, and on the national, state, and district statistics on dropouts. Policy recommendations include (1) develop a mentoring program called STAY (Support for Traditionally At-Risk Youth) for students who have failed the NJASK (2) Implement the program and gather yearly data for the students in the STAY program with the purpose of modifying program goals and objectives after data analysis
