About this collection

Dr. Art Gilbert’s fascination with automobile advertisements began shortly after World War II. He said, “the bug bit him” after seeing an advertisement for a 1954 Nash automobile in a Time Magazine. Since then, he has been actively collecting and purchasing collections of automobile advertisements. His collection includes advertisements dating from the carriages of the 1880s to cars of today. In addition to over 300 albums of advertisements, his collection has expanded to include books and magazines, models cars, and riding clothes. In 2001, he gave his wife a 1964 ½ Mustang convertible as a wedding gift.

 

Dr. Gilbert has been an active member of the Historical Vintage Car Club of Delaware, serving on the board of directors. He publishes a monthly newsletter for the club titled, Dr. Art’s Auto Ramblings, as well as other writings. He has been a member of the Rotary Club since 1983, and has severed as club treasurer, president, and fellowship chairman.

 

Dr. Gilbert plans to donate his automobile collection to Wilmington University for display at the Dover, DE location. 

 

Dr. Gilbert was born in Sanford, Maine. He received his BA (pre-med) and M.Ed. in School Administration from St. Michael’s College in Vermont. He received his Doctorate in Educational Administration from the State University of New York at Albany.

 

Prior to his employment at Wilmington University, Dr. Gilbert worked as a science teacher in Rhode Island and in Canada where he eventually transitioned into school administration. He moved to Delaware in 1983. In Delaware, he has served as a middle school administrator for the Capital School District, and then for fifteen years as the Director of Instruction for the Lake Forest School district. Dr. Gilbert has been employed as a faculty member at Wilmington University since 1988. He is the currently the coordinator for the MEE and MAT programs at the Dover and Georgetown, DE sites.

 

Dr. Gilbert lives in Dover, Delaware with his wife, Cookie. He previously lost two wives to cancer. He has two daughters, one son, and two stepsons. In addition, there are always one or two small dogs to round up the Gilbert family.
