On October 9, 2004, The Library of Congress and
First Lady, Laura Bush welcomed one and all to
the 2004 National Book Festival. Held on the Mall
in Washington, DC, this fourth annual celebration
of books and the joy of reading had something for
anyone who has ever picked up a book and entered
a new world, learned an amazing lesson or
discovered a previously
unknown fact.
Christine Payne, librarian at
Olive B. Loss Elementary
School in the Appoquinimink
School District arranged a
bus trip to the festival for
DSLMA. Librarians from
Red Clay, Christina,
Colonial, Brandywine, and
Appoquinimink school
districts participated in an
amazing collection of
readers, writers, and books,
books, books!
This year featured more than 70 award-winning
authors of mystery, poetry, history, biography and
more. Readers of all ages had a chance to hear
these authors talk about their work and what
inspired them to write. Among the writers were
Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, Lim Lehrer, David
Macaulay, Neil Gaiman, Ian Caldwell and Dustin
Thomason, R.L. Stine, Kate DiCamilo and many
more.
In the Library of Congress Pavilion, the Veterans
History Project recorded personal stories of the
men and women who have served in the military
during wartime as well as those who actively

According to Christine Payne, the
day was wonderful and the authors
were a joy to meet. “ Marc Brown

definitely a highlight of the kids'
day. Meeting him was a moment
to remember.”

It takes more than a four-leaf clover to win grants,
influence officials, reach the public or improve
professional skills. Today's librarians constantly
adjust to meet the changing demands of their
communities, technology, and profession. To do
otherwise is to cling to beliefs or behaviors that
persist long after the reason for them has been
forgotten -- to embrace superstition: the irrational
fear of the unknown. As most of us have come to
realize, the future is here, and it's not as frightening
as we'd thought!
Therefore, mark your calendar for Friday the 13th,
May 2005 and plan to attend the Delaware Library
Association Conference at the Dover Sheraton,
where the theme is "Great Libraries: It Takes More
Than Luck!"
Thirteen of the presenters, workshops and panels
for the one-day annual Delaware Library
Association conference include: "Books That
Cook," a review of popular titles with Joyce
Valenzi; "Detectives Without Pants," with Michael
Garrion, "Blogging for Students and Teachers,"
with Delaware teen author Laura Zeises, "Finding
Performers, Winning Grants," with Susan Saken,
Delaware Division of the Arts; and "Working with
Volunteers: A Toolkit." Also slated is "Internet
Literacy" (Fred Hoffstetter); "Pay Equity" (Martha
Duyra); "Just the Facts, Ma'am," (panel of
nonfiction writers, reviewers, and readers); "The
Patriot Act" (Stephanie Ardito); "Improving
Readers Advisory" (Peggy Dillner); an audio book
workshop and a safety seminar. The keynote
speaker is to be announced.
A book-signing is planned for the pre-conference
evening of Thursday, May 12th. Over a dozen
local and regional authors have agreed to
participate in this Delaware Library Association
fundraiser.
Please encourage vendors to contact Sonja Brown
(sbrown@lib.de.us) at the Delaware Division of
Libraries to secure tables for the Delaware Library
Association Conference.

Delmarva Discussions, the organization which
offers scholar-led book discussion series to
libraries and other community sites, is retiring
several of its series to make room for new
ones. With storage space tight, we are offering the
books from these older series to libraries so they
can be put to use in collections or to raise money
for programming.
The titles and genres are varied, with something
for every literary interest! There are adult titles
including those significant to Delmarva such as
Delaware History by Carol Hoffecker, Jack
Wennersten’s The Oyster Wars of Chesapeake
Bay, and Hal Roth’s edition of The Entailed Hat;
classics from Steinbeck, Hawthorne and
S h a k e s p e a r e ;
biographies of a range
of personalities; books
on World War I and
the Civil War; and
titles on American
History such as The
Federalist Papers and

America. Scaling back
our children’s books
allows us to offer kid-f
riendly stories
including the ever
popular Charlotte’s Web, Tatterhood Tales, and
The Wind in the Willows.
These titles and many more are available to
Delaware Libraries at no cost. You may select
specific titles or request a random selection. To
find out more, including all the titles available, go

The College and
Research Libraries
Division (CRLD) held
their 2004 Fall
Program on Tuesday,
October 5. The
program was held at
the Conference Center
at the Stanton campus
of Delaware
Technical and Community College. The theme
was Information Literacy.
The program featured two speakers. The first
speaker was Etheline G. Thomas, Chair of the
English Department at Delaware Technical and
Community College – Wilmington. Dr. Thomas’s
presentation was “Strengthening the Academic
Identity of First Year Students through
Information Literacy.” Dr. Thomas spoke about
the Academic Identity program for First Year
Students at DelTech. According to Dr. Thomas
there is a wealth of information useful in
collaborating with faculty and counselors to
develop strong academic identities for the first
year students. Information literacy relates to
academic identity formation through multiple
channels, such as fostering independent learning
and achieving academic success.
Pamela A. MacPherson of the English Department
at DelTech Stanton was the second speaker. She
spoke on Multiple Intelligences and Learning
Styles. According to the Multiple Intelligences
theory, people have different ways of learning and
perceiving the world and these can be classified
into eight (or seven or nine) different Intelligences.
Students can be more successful if they know
themselves and their strengths and can more easily
develop new skills if they understand the overall
framework of intelligences.
We had an array of college and university
librarians attending the program. We were able to
offer a free lunch to all attendees. Lunch provided
